Details

The Tomato is an herbaceous, usually sprawling plant in the Solanaceae or nightshade family, as are its close cousins potatoes, chili peppers, tobacco, eggplant and the poisonous belladonna. It is a perennial, often grown outdoors in temperate climates as an annual. The tomato is native to South America. The tomato is now grown worldwide for its edible fruits, with thousands of cultivars having been selected with varying fruit types, and for optimum growth in differing growing conditions. Cultivated tomatoes vary in size from tomberries, about 5mm in diameter, through cherry tomatoes, about the same 1–2 centimetres (0.4–0.8 in) size as the wild tomato, up to "beefsteak" tomatoes 10 centimetres (4 in) or more in diameter. Heirloom Brandywine Yields a heavy crop of firm, clear skinned, light rosy pink fruits on plants with potato like leaves. The standard for flavor Cherokee Purple The flesh is a unique brick red color with a rose/purple skin color. From Tennessee is extremely productive and has a very rich tomato flavor. Deliciously sweet Green Zebra Ripens to a green color, with cream/yellow spots and stripes. The flavor is generally considered excellent and this variety often makes top ten lists for its taste. Rutgers Rutgers has proven itself for years to be highly productive. Large, attractive fruits with thick, solid flesh. Superior flavor, delicious in salads, unsurpassed for home canning. Indeterminate. Roma Roma Tomato or Roma is a plum tomato which is commonly found in supermarkets. The tomato is a meaty, egg- or pear-shaped tomato that is available in red and yellow. It has few seeds and is a good canning and sauce tomato. Tomatillo Verde The plants are multibranching, 3-4' tall, and extremely prolific. The fruits are about the size of large cherry tomatoes and covered with easy-to-remove brown papery husks which conceal the dark green, smooth skin. Yellow Plum A very old variety. The plants are large and open with small oval fruit, 1 x 1¼ inches, that taste mild and sweet. There are typically 8 to 10 fruits per cluster, some late fruits have slight neck. Very productive.
